Polarity question
« on: May 30, 2018, 05:17:38 AM »
For the life of me, I can't figure out why ethyl acetate is less polar than ethanol. Ethyl acetate contains a double bond and 2 oxygen atoms. Why isn't it more polar than ethanol?

think about ehat else is present in the ethanol molecule that isn't present in ethyl acetate

Ethyl acetate contains a double bond and 2 oxygen atoms.

Why are those significant?  What other molecules are polar due to being an ester?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Work through the common intermolecular forces.
