confused regarding enthropy
« on: June 06, 2018, 04:30:32 PM »
Hey guys.

Im going through some examples my professor handed out. In the previous question I solved it was asking me if a reaction was spontaneous or not. I got a negative answer which ment it was spontaneous as G<0.

Now the second question was asking me : Sulfur may exist as S2 and as S8. Calculate the entropy change when four mole S2
converted into one mole of S8. Explain your calculation.

The answer I got was : -481 J/mol. But I don't understand their explanation. Because they are telling me that its less disordered when it goes from 4 moles of S2 to one mole of S8. Its enthropy is negative, shouldnt it be more disordered? (Just like in question one)?

Thanks in advance.
