In SO₄⁻², is -2 a formal charge or a net charge? Is there any difference between them?

I don't know about the dictionary definitions, but offhand I would say that formal charge is a calculated property of an atom.  I would use the term "net charge" when referring to a chemical species having one or many atoms.
