Question about TLC
« on: October 07, 2018, 07:58:18 PM »
Not sure about this question:
"If a compound has a Rf by TLC of 0.1 with a mobile of 20% ethyl acetate and 80%, what should be done to achieve a Rf of 0.5?"
I get that the Rf value is the ratio of distance travelled by sample : total distance travelled by solvent.
I think that the percentage of ethyl acetate needs to be increased... by how much?

IMHO there is not enough information to answer this question.

You can supply a qualitative answer, but not a quantitative one.

You are thinking on the right lines, percentage of ethyl acetate needs to go up. I would run TLCs in a couple of different ratios of ethyl acetate to find out the answer
