What is the name of the polymer obtained from the polymerization of 3-hydroxybutanoic acid. Also, is this polymer an ester? I know ester is formed by the reaction of alcohol and carboxylic acid. However, the monomer 3-hydroxybutanoic acid has both hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups, that's why it's confusing.

The product is Poly-(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB).
Why confusing the carboxyl group of one acid react with the OH-group of the next acid molecule.

What does R stand for?

R stands for rectus (latin) = right, because the molecule is chiral. There is also a S-product existing S stand for sinister = left.

Can it also be named as poly(3-hydroxybutanoic acid)

Yes it can.

One last question. Is this polymer a polyester?

Of course, what else should it be.
