5.0 moles of gases present->6.0moles of gases....?
« on: August 05, 2006, 10:18:38 PM »
A flask is filled with NOCl NO and Cl2. Initially there was a total of 5.0 moles of gases present. When equilibrium is reached, there is a total of 6.0 moles of gases present. Which of the following explains this observation?

A The reaction proceeded left because the Trial Keq<Keq
B The reaction proceeded right because the Trial Keq<Keq
C The reaction proceeded left because the Trial Keq>Keq
D The reaction proceeded right because the Trial Keq>Keq

i dont get the bold part. it is not clear , right?

Write a balanced equation for the equilibrium and the bold part will become clear. (There are 3 moles of gas on the 'left' side of the equation and 2 moles of gas on the 'right' side).

actually the equation was already given  ;D
2 NOCl(g) <-> 2 NO(g) + Cl2(g)

oh , suddently i have a thought :  does the reaction shift left ?

If what I thought was the left and right then it would shift 'left', but in the equation given it shifts right as there are more moles of gas at equilibrium.

does that mean like: initially, #of moles NOCl +#of moles NO+#of moles Cl2 = 5.0 moles
and then                            ---------------------------------------------------------------= 6.0 moles ?

It is probably my explanation, or lack of it! ;D

For there to be more moles of gas at equilibrium the equilibrium must have shifted to the side with more moles of gas on it.

If you still need help and don't know how to say it in english just write it in your language and hopefully someone will be able to translate it or answer it for you.
